Preparing for your UKVI Interview and Visa Application


Submit your application as soon as you receive your CAS from the University. You will then need to keep a look out for any communication or updates from UKVI as they assess your application. Here's how to prepare:

 

Preparing for Your UKVI Credibility Interview and Student Visa Application

You may be invited to an interview with the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). The UKVI credibility interview is an important part of the Student visa application process as it helps UKVI confirm that you are a genuine student, understand your study plans, and have the required English language skills. Where you are unable to demonstrate you're a genuine applicant, your visa will be refused. The guidance below will help you prepare confidently for your interview and support your Student visa application.

Be Prepared and Answer Honestly

The interview is designed to assess whether your intentions to study in the UK are genuine. Your answers should reflect your own knowledge, experiences, and future plans.

Before your interview:

  • Review your University of Wolverhampton offer letter and CAS details.
  • Check out our course pages! Read through your chosen course information, including modules and learning outcomes.
  • Understand why you selected the University of Wolverhampton and why studying in the UK is the right choice for you.
  • Be familiar with your financial arrangements and accommodation plans.
  • Practise speaking confidently in English, but avoid memorising prepared answers.
  • Remember - this is to establish you are a genuine student. Speak naturally and ensure your answers are personal to you.
  • Be honest about your immigration history in your application as this information must be declared.
  • If you do not understand a question during the interview, politely ask the interviewer to repeat or explain it.
  • Check your emails and junk folder regularly to ensure you do not miss any communications from UKVI.
  • Provide further information or evidence promptly to UKVI where requested to avoid any delays.  
  • Inform the university of your visa outcome as soon as you have this.

UKVI Interview Questions You May Be Asked

  • There may be many reasons to select a university such as course choices, location, campus facilities, costs, academic quality etc. However, you must avoid using general statements or reasons. For example, saying a university "has great facilities" is too vague, as it could apply to many institutions. Instead, give specific examples that show you have researched the university and explain why it is the right fit for you.

  • Think about why you chose this university over others 
  • Make sure you reasons are personal to you
  • There may be many reasons to select a university in the UK, however you must be able to demonstrate that you did thorough research when making this decision 
  • Think about why you chose the UK over other countries 
  • Make sure you reasons are personal to you
  • You may be expected to explain how you will afford your study in the UK, especially if there are alternative options in your home country or region which are more affordable. 
  • Think about why you chose your course
  • How the course relates to your previous education or work experience
  • The subjects or modules you expect to study, how will these benefit you 
  • How long is the course
  • What are the skills and knowledge you hope to gain from this course and modules 
  • Why this course is suitable for your future career
  • You should have a clear understanding of the course content before your interview. Ensure you read the university course webpages!
  • Ensure you know the full fees of your course and living costs
  • Be clear on how you will pay for your studies and time in the UK
  • Can you evidence where your funds came from?
  • Studying in the UK can be expensive, UKVI expect you to have a clear plan on how to manage these costs 
  • If you are eligible to bring dependants, be clear on how you will support them
  • If you are planning to work whilst studying, ensure you know the rules around working. Remember, your main reason for being in the UK is to study

Getting Your Visa Decision

Once you receive your visa outcome you must share this with the university Student Visa Compliance and Advice team straight away. You can do this by uploading the decision on your eVision enrolment page, or emailing evidence to RTS@wlv.ac.uk.

What If My Visa Is Refused

 It is important to review the reasons for the refusal, address any issues, and submit an admin review where applicable. If your application is refused, please send your visa refusal letter to RTS@wlv.ac.uk so the team can advise.
