Building Control Surveyors are highly trained and experienced members of the built environment profession. They operate in both the public and private sector, providing the vital role of checking that building work is safe and sustainable in line with Building Regulations.

As a Building Control Degree Apprentice, you will learn about the construction and inspection of building work. You will develop a wider understanding of the building control function and have the opportunity to progress both professionally and academically.

Through the Degree Apprenticeship programme, you will develop the skills, knowledge, behaviours and an appreciation to address a wide range of issues and to lead and work with others in the delivery of successful projects. You will be supported by your employer and a skills coach on the programme. Course content includes elements of work-based learning, pre-contract studies, on-site decision making, management and liaison with clients, construction professionals and operatives.

    • undertaking detailed inspections of plans and drawings
    • undertaking detailed inspections of building work
    • analysing information from inspections or visits to buildings and construction sites.
    • providing professional advice to assist compliance with Building Regulations

How it works

The Degree Apprenticeship involves online teaching one-day per week in term time. It also involving apprentices attending two one-week intensive delivery sessions annually at the University of Wolverhampton. The course requires that all modules must be successfully completed along with off-the-job (OTJ) training and an end-point assessment (EPA). For entrants at level 4, the course requires four years to complete. The course has been designed and developed in collaboration with employers and professional bodies.

Qualifications

The Degree incorporates vocational and academic elements. On successful completion of the programme you will achieve a BSc (Hons) Degree Building Control. You will also be in assisted in preparing for securing corporate membership of the CIOB or CABE

Fees and funding

For employers with a payroll below £3 million: The Government will pay 95% of the cost of the apprenticeship training and assessment for apprentices of any age, for employers who will not be paying the apprenticeship levy. You may also be eligible for extra employer incentives.

For employers with a payroll above £3 million: Since May 2017 employers are able to use their Apprenticeship Levy contributions towards the cost of the apprenticeship using their digital account. We will agree a payment schedule and discuss funding availability before you start your apprenticeships and ensure the cost to your business is clear upfront.

Entry Requirements

All applicants will need to be currently employed by a company within the UK and be working or a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Academic Pathway:

The entry requirement for the apprenticeship will typically be a minimum of three A-Levels at Grade C or higher or a Level 3 qualification in a related discipline. However, we do accept candidates lacking the relevant qualifications or grades who have sufficient relevant experience and knowledge. The final decision is that of each employer.
