Graduating with a First-Class degree in BSc (Hons) Football Coaching and Performance, Shaun Johnson is preparing for an exciting new chapter, having secured an opportunity to coach football in California.

Originally from Willenhall, Shaun chose the University of Wolverhampton after discovering the Football Coaching and Performance course while exploring options following college.

"I'd always played football because my dad was a football coach, but I wasn't entirely sure what career path I wanted to take," said Shaun. "I considered sports science because I've always enjoyed academics, but when I saw the course, I thought I'd give it a try. I'm really glad I did because I loved it."

Over the three years of study, Shaun embraced both the academic and practical aspects of the course, developing his skills as a coach while gaining valuable industry experience.

One of his proudest achievements was completing his dissertation, while also captaining the University's football team during his final year.

"Finishing my dissertation was a huge moment because I put a lot of work into it. Being captain of the football team in my final year was also something I was really proud of."

A placement opportunity completed as part of his studies proved particularly significant, leading directly to the coaching role he holds today at Walsall Football Club Academy.

"As part of one of our modules, we had to undertake a placement. I chose to volunteer at Walsall, where I had previously played. That placement opened the door to the role I do now, and I'm still there today."

Shaun believes the breadth of the course helped him appreciate the many different opportunities available within coaching and sport.

"Not every module was necessarily something I expected to enjoy, but looking back they all helped me. The course gives you an understanding of lots of different areas, whether that's grassroots football, disability football or simply learning how to work effectively with people. In the end, that wider perspective was really valuable."

Throughout his studies, Shaun says the support from staff made a lasting impact.

"The lecturers were brilliant. Even though there are only a small number of tutors, you always feel recognised and supported. Rus Smith has been someone I've been able to rely on for advice and opportunities throughout my studies, and Martin Harrison was a massive help with my dissertation because he has experience in the industry I want to work in. Being able to learn from people with that knowledge has been invaluable."

That support has already helped Shaun secure his next opportunity. Through connections developed during his time at the University, he has been offered the chance to spend a year coaching football in the United States.

"In February, I'll be heading to California to coach football for a year, which I'm really excited about. Long term, I just want to keep doing something I enjoy. Coaching is something I'm passionate about, so being able to build a career around that is fantastic."

For Shaun, one of the most rewarding aspects of coaching is the opportunity to inspire young people while working in an environment he enjoys.

"I enjoy building relationships with the children I coach and helping them develop. It's a really rewarding role and something I genuinely look forward to every day."

Reflecting on graduation day, Shaun admitted he is already thinking ahead to the future.

"I'm excited about what's next. Graduation is a great achievement, but it also feels like the start of a new chapter."

With a First-Class degree, leadership experience, a coaching role at Walsall Academy and an international opportunity on the horizon, Shaun leaves the University of Wolverhampton well placed to pursue a successful future in football coaching.
