The value of human connection - a reflection on Uni Mental Health Day
On Thursday 12 March, the community came together in support of Uni Mental Health Day. This year’s theme of ‘human connection’ was brought to life through a vibrant programme of creative and wellbeing activities. Throughout the day, students and colleagues had the opportunity to pause, create, reflect, and connect.

In this message of thanks Dr Clare Dickens, Director of Student Life and Principal Safeguarding Lead, reflects on the value of connection.
I want to share my sincere thanks and pride following another successful University Mental Health Day.
Year after year, this event continues to grow, and what stood out most this time was the incredible collaboration across teams, schools, and departments. A special thank you to Phil Adeogun for his hard work, and to all Student Life colleagues who gave their time and support.
This year’s theme was connection. To me, connection is fundamental — we all rely on one another, often more than we realise. In my experience, when people struggle to connect with others, they seek connection elsewhere, not always in healthy ways.
I’d encourage everyone to find small, meaningful ways to connect with each other. Even a brief moment of kindness can make a real difference to someone’s sense of belonging.
But just as importantly, we must look after ourselves. The work we do matters deeply, and it can be emotionally demanding. Staying connected and supporting one another is essential for our students and for ourselves.
We need each other just as much as our students need us.
Thank you for the care, compassion, and commitment you bring every day. It truly makes a difference.
Dr Clare Dickens
