A West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) employee preparing to complete his Paramedic Science apprenticeship degree at the University will celebrate a special family milestone this autumn when his daughter begins her own studies at the University.

Peter Healey, who is due to complete his Paramedic Science apprenticeship in April 2027, has spent the last several years balancing frontline ambulance work with academic study. This September, his daughter Chloe will follow in his footsteps by joining the University to study Forensic Science, beginning with a foundation year before progressing to the degree programme.

For a period, father and daughter will share the experience of being University of Wolverhampton students at the same time, creating a unique family connection as one journey nears its conclusion and another begins.

Peter said:

"I'm extremely proud of Chloe and excited to see her start her university journey. I know from my own experience that university can be challenging, particularly when you're balancing study with other commitments, but it is also an incredible opportunity to learn, develop and discover what you are capable of.

"It will be quite special knowing that while I'm approaching the end of my degree, Chloe will be starting hers at the same university. I'll certainly be there if she needs any advice, although I suspect she may quickly become the expert in her own field!"

Peter has undertaken his apprenticeship degree while working for WMAS, developing clinical knowledge and practical skills alongside leadership, research, evidence-based practice and professional development. Studying while working in the ambulance service has enabled him to connect academic learning with real-world clinical experience.

As he approaches the completion of his studies, Peter is looking forward to continuing his career with WMAS and putting the knowledge and skills gained through his degree into practice.

Meanwhile, Chloe is preparing to begin her own academic journey in Forensic Science. Although their chosen subjects are very different, both fields require scientific knowledge, critical thinking and the ability to apply learning to real-world situations.

Chloe's studies will focus on the examination and analysis of evidence and the application of scientific principles to criminal investigations and the justice system.

For the Healey family, September 2026 will mark the start of an unusual chapter, with one family member working towards the completion of a degree and the other taking their first steps into higher education.

Peter added:

"University has become a really important part of my life over the last few years. It has been hard work, particularly alongside working for the ambulance service, but I'm proud of how far I've come.

"To see Chloe starting her own journey at the same university makes it even more special. We'll be studying completely different subjects and taking different routes, but hopefully we'll be able to support each other along the way.

"I'm looking forward to finishing my degree in April 2027, but I'm equally looking forward to watching Chloe start her own journey."
