Cells and Microscopy

In this session, students will be introduced to cytology, the study of cells, and will learn how to use light microscopes. We will explore what cytology is, examine different types of cells and their structures, and understand how cells form the building blocks of tissues, organs, and the human body. The session will include a hands-on practical activity, where students will stain and observe their own cheek cells under a microscope.

Each session is 50 minutes in duration and can accommodate one class. A maximum of 3 sessions can be provided in one day.

This session links in with the school curriculum in the following ways

  • cells as the fundamental unit of living organisms, including how to observe, interpret and record cell structure using a light microscope
  • the functions of the cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus,
    vacuole, mitochondria and chloroplasts
  • the similarities and differences between plant and animal cells
  • the structural adaptations of some unicellular organisms
  • the hierarchical organisation of multicellular organisms: from cells to tissues to organs to systems to organisms

  • Addressing the needs of each pupil.
  • Linking curriculum learning to careers.
  • Encounters with Further and Higher Education.
