What happens on the course?

The BA (Hons) Business and Human Resource Management course is designed to give students a structured introduction to academic life. HR students will receive a structured welcome programme, including introductions to the Business School, library services, and digital learning platforms. Access to academic skills workshops along with the expertise of our teaching staff will support students to adapt quickly to university.

Students are allocated a personal tutor who can continue to offer academic and pastoral support for the duration of the course. These professional relationships are useful for all students who join the University of Wolverhampton, but they can prove particularly useful for underrepresented groups and first-generation students.

At a modular level, progression and student success is supported in several ways. Firstly, students are encouraged to maintain open communication with their module teams, utilising opportunities for additional support and seeking further guidance when needed. Formative submissions are encouraged on all our modules, allowing students to share sections of draft work to seek feedback and build confidence in relation to assessments.

As a course team, we continuously look for opportunities to extend our course offering, whether that be organising interdepartmental trips and events – great for professional networking – or bringing industry experts into our classrooms for guest lectures and spotlight discussions.

Our purpose-built Business School, the Lord Swraj Paul Building, sits at the heart of the University's City Campus - Molineux, right next to Wolverhampton Wanderers' Molineux Stadium. The six storey centre is home to an executive education suite, innovative teaching and learning spaces, an IT suite, consulting rooms and a central social space and café.

This module introduces you to Human Resources (HR) through the lens of the CIPD Profession Map, helping you understand the standards, behaviours, and values expected of HR professionals today. You will examine the core areas of the Profession Map, such as People Practice, Culture and Behaviour, and Analytics and Evidence, and consider how these shape modern HR work. Through a mix of practical experience and professional development sessions, this module will enable students to explore essential themes such as personal effectiveness, leadership, communication, ethical practice, and lifelong learning. Drawing directly from work experience and/or professional setting, students will reflect on their real-world experiences to deepen their understanding of what it means to grow and succeed in their chosen field. Students may draw on case studies or sector examples to connect theory to practice. This module represents an opportunity for students to apply and develop, through work experience, the skills and knowledge they have gained on their course so far. This module involves a yearlong placement in a business-related area. The year-long placement provides students with the opportunity to gain experience of graduate level work. In this way students can gain a second, world-recognised qualification with no extra work. Employers are very keen to employ graduates who have already had work experience as part of their course and this contributes to a student’s unique selling point By taking up the opportunity of a year- long work placement, students will improve on a range of employment skills to develop the confidence and positive attitude required for academic success and career development in a business context. A range of placement opportunities are advertised via Careers, Enterprise & The Workplace, Directorate of Student & Academic Services, and one to one support is provided. Careers provide workshops to assist students with applying for placements and undertaking the various elements of the recruitment process. After successfully being appointed by an employer, you remain a student at the University and can access support and services. Academic engagement will be made via undertaking the two assessments, utilising and reflecting on your knowledge and experience gained from your placement.

The BA (Hons) Business and Human Resource Management course is structured in such a way that students will learn core knowledge and concepts before progressing on to more complex ideas and analysis. Early in the course Students will be expected to demonstrate an underpinning knowledge of essential business and human resource management skills such as an understanding of digital business and the values, behaviours and ethical standards important for people practitioners.

As you transition through your study you will be required to think more broadly about theories and concepts that relate to business and human resources, including practical skills in the employment lifecycle, leadership and management, employee relations and employment law. These modules explore both theoretical understanding and practical application.

In your final year you will require critical analysis and strategic insight of progressive and evolving topics such as organisational change, global people management and sustainability, business analytics and intelligence.

Delivery of core content will take place in a seminar format, with opportunities for taught input, group activities and class discussions. In-person learning experiences are enhanced through online activities that can be accessed independently by students. This blended learning approach is designed to be flexible, inclusive and engaging for all students, regardless of level of study.

Other Requirements
