Why choose this course?

If you're interested in Sports Therapy but don't yet have the grades, subjects or confidence to start the full degree, this four-year route is built for you. You'll spend your first year building academic and practical foundations, then progress onto exactly the same accredited Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation degree, taught in the same clinical spaces, by the same expert team.

You'll benefit from:

  • an accessible route in, including our Prepare for Foundation pathway for applicants without traditional Level 3 qualifications
  • no requirement for a prior science background, unlike the standard three-year route
  • teaching from lecturers who are working sports therapists, from the very start of your Foundation Year
  • small-group teaching, personal tutoring and structured academic support from your first term.

This course is accredited by both the Society of Sports Therapists (SST) and Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

What's unique about this course?

This course is designed specifically to close the gap between where you are now and where a Sports Therapy career needs you to be. Here's what makes it different from a standard access or bridging course.

  • A genuine second chance: our Prepare for Foundation pathway considers applicants without Level 3 qualifications who can show relevant interest or experience.
  • One continuous journey: you don't reapply or change course after your Foundation Year, you progress straight onto the same accredited degree.
  • Confidence-first teaching: the Foundation Year is built around academic skills, digital literacy and personal tutoring, not just subject content.
  • The same industry-standard facilities: as you progress, you'll train using VALD health technology, the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill and an environmental chamber.
  • Shared learning across disciplines: you'll study alongside students from related Health and Sport courses, widening your professional network from Year 1.

What happens on the course?

Your first year focuses on building confidence rather than clinical competence. You'll study the fundamentals of sport, exercise and the human body, alongside academic skills such as critical thinking, research methods and academic writing, delivered through small-group workshops and one-to-one support. Practical sessions introduce you to fitness testing, training methods and coaching, so you're already applying theory to practice before you begin the degree proper.

From Year 2 onwards, you follow the same structure as the three-year Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation degree: building clinical assessment skills, therapeutic techniques and rehabilitation planning, before moving into advanced clinical practice, trauma management and supervised placements by your final year.

Across the course, you can expect:

  • a gradual step-up in academic and clinical demand, so you're never facing more than you're ready for
  • personal tutoring and student success coaching throughout your Foundation Year
  • practical, patient-facing learning in the University's clinical spaces from Year 2
  • assessment that lets you choose scenarios and case studies aligned to your own career interests
  • ongoing access to recorded lectures and online resources via Canvas.

Placements on the course

Placement preparation starts early on this course, so you arrive at your practical experience ready, not overwhelmed. From the beginning of your studies, you're introduced to the expectations and professional requirements of clinical placement, before progressing to supervised practice in the University's internal Sports Injury and Massage clinic and at University-supported sporting events.

Placements on this course are designed to:

  • build progressively, starting with observation and preparation before hands-on clinical hours
  • link directly to your coursework and professional development modules
  • develop core workplace skills, including communication, teamwork and clinical decision-making
  • give you supervised, real-world patient contact you can reflect on and evidence in your portfolio.

Employability on the course

Professional development runs through every year of this course, not just the final one. You'll build essential skills including communication, time management, problem-solving and academic writing from your Foundation Year, and layer on clinical and business skills as you progress.

You'll benefit from:

  • an extended induction and personal tutoring that supports your transition into higher-level study
  • placements in clinical, community and sport settings as you progress through the degree
  • workshops on CV writing, interview technique and networking, alongside reflective portfolio building
  • modules that stay current through our staff's clinical practice and research
  • professional accreditation from the Society of Sports Therapists (SST) and CIMSPA on successful completion.
