What's unique about this course?

Not every Sports Therapy course gives you this level of access to industry-standard technology, or this much choice over how you're assessed. Here's what sets Wolverhampton apart from other providers in the region.

  • Dual accreditation: this is one of the few Sports Therapy degrees accredited by both the Society of Sports Therapists (SST) and Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), so your qualification is recognised right across the sport, health and fitness sector.
  • Elite-level equipment: you'll train using VALD health technology, the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill and an environmental chamber, kit normally reserved for professional sport.
  • A more accessible entry point: with a typical offer of 96 UCAS points, this course is open to committed applicants who might be turned away by competitor courses requiring 104–112 points.
  • Personalised assessment: choose the patient profiles, injury histories and clinical settings you're assessed on, so your portfolio reflects the career you actually want.
  • Your own clinic experience: you'll treat real patients in the University's Sports Injury and Massage clinics from your first year, not just on placement.

What happens on the course?

This is a practice-based course, so you'll spend as much time in clinical and rehabilitation spaces as you do in lectures. Teaching moves you through three stages of development, each building your clinical confidence before you graduate.

In Year 1, you'll learn the foundations: musculoskeletal anatomy, basic clinical assessment and safe injury management, alongside sports massage skills you can start using in supervised practice. Year 2 develops your clinical reasoning, so you can carry out a full musculoskeletal assessment, apply manual therapy and design rehabilitation plans for real injuries. By Year 3, you're managing complex clinical scenarios, treating trauma and acute injuries, and completing supervised placements and a professional project that reflect the demands of the job.

Across all three years, you can expect:
•    small-group practical sessions in dedicated clinical and rehabilitation spaces
•    case-based learning built around real clinical scenarios
•    assessment that lets you choose the patient case studies and settings you work with
•    regular feedback from lecturers who are active sports therapists
•    digital resources and recorded sessions you can revisit at your own pace.

Placements on the course

Placements on this course are built to give you real clinical hours, not just observation. You'll build a portfolio of practice-based learning inside the University's own Sports Injury and Massage clinics, opportunities at University-supported sporting events, and opportunities with our external partner organisations, so you leave with genuine patient contact hours and a professional network before you graduate.

Every placement is designed to:

  • link directly to your coursework, assessments or professional development modules.
  • give you industry-based problems and scenarios to work through, not just tasks to observe.
  • build workplace skills such as communication, teamwork and clinical decision-making.
  • let you apply your clinical knowledge with real patients, in clinic and in the field.

Employability on the course

From your first term, this course is designed around the career you're heading towards. You'll graduate not just with a degree, but with a portfolio of evidence, patient contact hours and a professional network employers recognise.

You'll benefit from:

  • an extended induction that gets you settled before teaching begins
  • practice-based projects built around real-world clinical scenarios
  • embedded CV writing, networking and business planning skills, so you're ready for private practice as well as employed roles
  • modules kept current through our staff's ongoing research and clinical practice
  • a direct route to Society of Sports Therapists membership on graduation, subject to a valid First Aid certificate and commitment to Continual Professional Development.
