Fifteen Football Coaching and Performance students from the University of Wolverhampton have secured highly sought‑after coaching contracts across the United States for summer 2026, marking the third consecutive year of successful recruitment through the University’s partnership with Challenger Sports, one of North America’s leading youth coaching organisations.

Students from the University’s flagship Football Coaching and Performance degree, along with learners from the Wolves Foundation Degree partnership, have been offered placements in locations including Texas, Chicago, Kansas, California and Washington, where they will coach young players while gaining valuable international experience.

Previous cohorts have benefited from paid coaching roles, cultural immersion, travel opportunities and enhanced employability - experiences that have contributed to a strong pipeline of graduates working in global football environments.

This year also marks an exciting new development, with the University forming a partnership with SoCal Reds FC, based in California. Through this collaboration, six current third‑year students and two recent graduates have been offered full‑time 18‑month coaching contracts, supporting the club’s fast‑growing schools and community football programme.

Russ Smith, Course Leader for Football Coaching and Performance, said:
“We are incredibly proud of our students and everything they have achieved. Securing coaching contracts across the USA is a testament not only to their talent, professionalism and work ethic, but also to the strength of our partnerships with Challenger Sports and SoCal Reds FC. These opportunities give our students life‑changing international experience and places them right at the heart of a rapidly growing football landscape - especially with the World Cup on the horizon. It’s fantastic to see our students making their mark on the global stage.”

The opportunities come at a significant moment for football in the United States, with anticipation building ahead of the FIFA World Cup being hosted across the USA, Canada and Mexico in 2026. Students undertaking their coaching roles during this period will be immersed in an unprecedented moment for the sport’s development across North America.
