University academic to champion inclusion at national ‘Active Muslim Girls’ conferences
The University of Wolverhampton is proud to announce that Dr Irfan Khawaja, a recent addition to our academic community, will speak at three major national conferences this November and December as part of the Youth Sport Trust’s ‘Active Muslim Girls’ initiative.
The programme, developed by the Youth Sport Trust aims to improve PE for Muslim girls and empower educators and the wider workforce to enhance PE, school sport, and physical activity provision for Muslim girls. Grounded in research and informed by the voices of the girls themselves, it aims to help practitioners better understand and meet their needs - ultimately fostering greater engagement, enjoyment, and a sense of belonging in PE, school sport, and physical activity
Dr Khawaja, widely recognised for his Ramadan Guidance for Educational Settings will share his expertise on breaking down barriers to physical activity and addressing misconceptions about exercise during Ramadan. His work continues to shape inclusive practices in schools and communities across the UK.
The conferences, taking place in Manchester, London, and Birmingham, will bring together leaders in sport, education, and inclusion, alongside major organisations such as Nike and the Football Association, to support this vital initiative.
Dr Irfan Khawaja, Senior Lecturer in Public Health said:
“Every person, regardless of age, faith, gender or socio-economic status, has a right to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Physical activity behaviours amongst children track through to adolescence, so it is crucial to encourage active lifestyles from an early age. I am delighted to support the Youth Sport Trust in promoting physical activity for Muslim girls nationally. Ramadan is often seen as a barrier to exercise, but with accurate guidance and inclusive environments, we can ensure safe participation for all.”
